The Vikings believed, like in most religions, that their world was controlled by something bigger than them selves. They believed that everything around them was controlled by the Gods and all of them played a different part in the Vikings everyday life. For instants there were Gods controlling the harvest, the weather, the fertility and the skills and luck that the Vikings would need in battle.
You can read below about some of the most famous Viking Gods. Some of them you may have heard about, but you will probably also find Gods which you have never heard about before.

Odin is the highest ranking God in the Nordic mythology, and according to the legends he is a one-eyed, grey-bearded, old man living in the castle of Valhalla in the home of the Viking Gods, Asgard. He is the father of Thor – the famous God of thunder (with his hammer Mjollnir). Odin is always followed by his two ravens Huginn and Muninn and the wolves Geri and Freki, while he rides his eight-legged horse Sleipnir on the wind. Odin is the God of war and battle, but also death, wisdom and poetry. Odin only has one eye because he gave the other one up for drinking from the well of wisdom which gave him the ability to see and understand what was going on all over the world. (In the 9 worlds) It is said, that Odin came up with the idea to split the year in 12 month and the week in 4 days. Wednesday is Odins day.
We have named one of our indoor games Odin’s tower after the God to symbolize his ability to survey everything going on in the world.
Odin’s horse Sleipnir
In Nordic mythology the strongest and fastest horse Sleipnir is Odin’s eight-legged horse. The horse never gets tired, can fly and is loved by Odin, but hated by the enemies, also known as the giants. The giants were envious of Odin’s horse, because they had created Sleipnir themselves.
The story of Sleipnir
One day a builder came to Valhalla, he offered to build an unbreakable wall to protect Valhalla. Nobody liked the idea because the price of the wall was; Freya as wife, the sun and the moon. However, there would be no payment, if he could not keep the deadline, which was three years. This agreement was much too risky for the people in Valhalla, also known as the Aesir.
However, Loke convinced his people to negotiate with the builder, and agreed that he would get only one year to finish the wall. Everyone thought that he could never get it done within one year. The builder only requested one thing, which was to use his own horse; Svadilfare. The Aesir accepted it and they were all happy, because now the wall would be free.
The work proceeded much more rapidly than they had anticipated; therefore the Aesir had to do something to avoid the payment. Loke was a smart man, so he turned himself into a mare and beguiled the stallion Svadilfari away. Svadilfari ran after the mare into the forest. There is a lot of Louboutin Sneakers for men.
The builder was looking for his horse, but without any luck. When the time limit exceeded he had still not finished the wall. He became so angry that he revealed his true form. It appeared that he was a giant!
Nine months later Loke returned with a foal with eight legs, he gave the horse to Odin. The world’s strongest and fastest horse was borne.
We have named our rocking horse after Odin’s horse Sleipnir.

When Thor got hungry he could slaughter and eat his two goats and afterwards swing his magic hammer Mjollnir upon the skin and bones after which they would come to live again. The hammer Mjollnir was the best tool of war that the Gods had, because when Thor threw his hammer it always hit the target whereupon it returned again. Four of the Danish weekdays have been named after the Nordic Gods and Thursday is Thor’s day.

Heimdall
Heimdall is the god of light, the son of nine mothers (variously given as the daughters of Geirrendour the Giant or of Aegir). He was born at the end of the world and raised by the force of the earth, seawater and the blood of a boar. Because of his shining, golden teeth he is also called Gullintani ("gold tooth"). His hall is Himinbjorg, The Cliffs of Heaven, and his horse is Gulltop. Heimdall carries the horn Gjallar. He is the watchman of the gods and guards Bifrost, the only entrance to Asgard, the realm of the gods. It is Heimdall's duty to prevent the giants from forcing their way into Asgard. He requires less sleep than a bird and can see a hundred miles around him, by night as well as by day. His hearing is so accurate that no sound escapes him: he can even hear the grass grow or the wool on a sheep's back. |
